For those of you who don’t already know, Songbird, the alternative XUL-based media player is available for Linux and Mac now.

It does almost everything that iTunes does, and a little more. For instance, you can navigate the Web with it. When you go to a page that has music on it, it will show the music in a playlist bar below the page, and you can download it. If you don’t want to download the music, you can still add it to your library, and you can listen to it remotely. This is good if you have a constant internet connection, one wherefrom you never disconnect.

It currently has two themes, or ‘feathers’ as Songbird calls them. They are Rubberducky (ebony) and Dove (ivory), seen in the pix below respectively:

I think that it is beautiful. One of the things that keeps me from using Ubuntu full time is the lack of a really good iTunes alternative, but it seems that Songbird has solved that. Now all I am waiting for is a good alternative to Microsoft Office 2007 (OpenOffice is way too slow for serious use on my computer….).

Kudos to the Songbird team; keep it up!
