Latin Reconstruction

This is a procedure on reconstructing Latin words from Proto-Indo-European.

  1. Find P.I.E. Root: *neighw- (athematic)
  2. Nouns
    1. Apply sound change laws: *niw-
    2. Apply Latin Athematic Declension (consonantal stem): *nix (gen. *niwis)
    3. Voila!
  3. Verbs
    1. Apply sound change laws: *niw-
    2. Apply Latin Athematic Conjugation: *niwum (1st prsn.)
  1. Voila!

A sample text (I cannot use IPA in wordpress, so I will use a simple latin alphabet, with “:” as in IPA)

In prinkapio: diwos kreawit kailo:s et tera….

In traditional Latin, that would be:

In principio deus creavit caelos et terra…..

English:

In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth.

There you go.
